Volunteers and committee members are always needed! New ideas, inspiration and suggestions are key to supporting the needs of the Greater Edmonton and Northern Alberta Celiac and those adversely affected by Gluten.

In Memoriam: Adriana Strikwerda

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Adriana Strikwerda on October 18, 2022, age 80.

Adriana is lovingly remembered by Sako, her husband of 53 years; sons, Ivan (Karen), Eric (Eva),  and Quinn (Maddie); her grandchildren; her brother Kees (Ina) in the Netherlands; and her many relatives and close friends.

Service took place on October 24, 2022 at St. George’s Anglican Church in Edmonton.

We are immensely honoured and grateful that Adriana and her family thought of the Edmonton Chapter of Celiac Canada as recipient for donations in her memory.

Adriana generously dedicated countless hours of her time and energies supporting the Edmonton Chapter of Celiac Canada for many years, and we will miss her thoughtful and unquestionable volunteer spirit as Treasurer and volunteer for so many Chapter events.

In Memoriam: Katherine Hurley

It is with sadness that we share the news that member and volunteer Katherine Hurley passed away suddenly while visiting Banff on September 15, 2020.

Katherine was an active member and dedicated volunteer with the CCA Edmonton Chapter for many years. Katherine’s eagerly volunteered at casinos, and many events as well as a regular office volunteer assisting with the varied duties of running the office.

Katherine was most remembered for being so willing to help out and reach out with such kindness where she could and volunteered with enthusiasm.

Our sincerest condolences are extended to Katherine’s husband Ken and the rest of her family.  She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.

A private funeral was held and a virtual service was broadcast Thursday, September 24, 2020.

Undeclared Gluten ingredients warning

CCA UPDATE_Food Products in Canada-US

CCA continues to consult with and monitor Health Canada regarding the announcement that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has made steps to address potential disruption in Canada’s food supply including temporarily suspending enforcement of certain food labelling requirements.
“Currently, the CFIA’s action allows products made in Canada that were originally destined for foodservice use in the U.S. to be sold at retail in Canada, under certain conditions.” Given that the food market has stabilized, the likelihood is low but we recommend consumers should still be alert.
Manufacturers who decide this route have been instructed by Health Canada to follow enhanced labelling requirements and to be cautious of barley-based ingredients such as malt flavour or extract and yeast extracts (especially autolyzed yeast extract). Read More: CCA UPDATE_Food Products in Canada-US
